Cast Update... Extended Figure Construct Studies and some Comp studies

 FINAL ARICULATION b4 beginnng tone

__________________________________________________________

2nd do over digital value study of cast
began toning the cast to get the values based of study made digitally

cast update for the past 2 weeks.  2 digital value studies of my cast: the first one being too dark compared to what i see and the second one being more correct and keeping it to 6 values.  the second one groups the darks more correctly.

and of course i have beginning toning my cast based on the digital value study i did.  of course the reason i did it twice was my intructor wanted me to understand the reason of grouping the part above the eye with the darks.  bc if u compare the left side of the cheek and the are above the eyes u can see that it is actually pretty close in value.  also i have to put a background in there for nice composition... i have one month to finish this along with the rest of my TAD classes... :/

i revisited another comp study that i had done earlier and tried to fix it up and make it more clean.  i was happy with thi one honestly.  i think i am getting the idea.

some quick figure studies.  my instructor began to notice that i may be making up shapes.  so he literally asked me as to what i see and realized that maybe about 20-25 min is not enough to spend and basically wanted me to spend like a whole day doing one figure.  as u will see in the next figure

spent a good amount of time on this figure trying to really understand see the anatomy.  took lot of breaks inbetween and came back to it.  Ron (my instructor) wanted me to do both a back and front figure construction and take as much time as i could spare to really try and understand it.

live session 15 min pose just trying to get as much information as i could down for this pose. and i havent done any values in ages this semester for the figure so as  u can see its very spotty and rough.

this session was on Saturday and it was 3 hour long pose.  so i took the chance to sit there and really study and figure construct the model to the best ov my abilities.  our model was male and was very well built and pretty ripped so that helped in seeing alot of the muscles

5 min pose form live session

another figure construction study on a figure..

this the second one that i worked on and spent as much time as i could on the front of the figure.  really trying to get the muscles and see the anantomy and figure construct the figure as best as i can.

and a painting i attempted to fix up... fixed some drawing issues and try to get the right colors.  this painting was worked on about 2 wks ago and just hadnt had time to upload it.  looks better.  i wanted to put in the eyes but have no time.

2 comp studies that i have been working on.  the bottom one still needs some work.  the top one im very close to finishing.  i have to throw in some quick comp studies and color ones as well... practice practice practice.

alasss been a while but here is a quick update.. this cast is taking up so much of my time!!! 1 month left of school till all the work is due.  its def going to be rough ... gotta lot of work to finish up.  thanks as always for stopping by.  as always leave comments and crits...

comp study for about an hour

some more figures construction of the back

an attempt to do a value study comp but i got lost into details and now the viewer travles all over the place bc of my terribad brush marks  (will come back to revisit this and make changes to it)

a glaze over the monochromatic painting that i did a while back.  trying to find the colors and make sense of it.  oil paints

another major update on my cast.  still some errors but this is what i have as of last week...  nearly ready to lay down some tone

and lastly a quick comp study then i decided i would try to detail as much as i could spare...

well here is another update... trying to fit it comp studies and splitting time between figure and other work here at TAD.  the majority of the week was spent  working on the cast.  need to push past the block in stage so i can get ready to lay down some tone.  lessons learned:  dont lose the overall shape and value, pillow shape and box in for the figure so all the shapes of the muscles do not look random, and i dont know anything about color :/...

so after the shapes are correct when doing the block in.  we then move on to toning down the value that we see. we keep it simple then go crazy.  so for now we will guesstimate 5 values that we see on the cast and lay it down to start breaking it up and showing where the form changes; basically where the light is hitting it and allows us see those changes.  Those shapes we blocked in are basically going to be shaded.  we keep it at 5 values to make it very simple there are obviously more then this but to begin with always keep things simple and then move to more complex things.

as usual thank you for taking a look.   plz feel free to leave comments and crit.  take care

all comp studies were done in photoshop with intuous 4; the portrait was done with oil paints.  and the cast is being done with the most expensive charcoal evarrr.

Here is the cast I am working on during this semester for my cast drawing class.

the last 2 pics are from live session.  lot of figure and lot of my free time has actually been spent working on the cast i have to do this semester. Cast drawing class here is offered as one of the classes we can take here at TAD.  it is offered as an extra class but it is required for students following the 2D entertainment program.  its a really good exercise that teaches u proportion, values, and helps you with even seeing subtle changes that are very very difficult to see.  its a very old traditional way to study art to help you literally copy what you see in real life to a drawing and takes a verrryy long time to do (like a very long time and a lottt of hourssss). which is why we have one assignment the whole semester (the one cast).  Alot of the atelier schools do these types of studies and just another way helping one such as myself become closer to becoming an artist.  so this will be a very fun experience.

and trust me its been quite an experience.  making sure the angle is right, the shape is correct.  drives u crazy, even at times u want to punch a hole through it.  fun times really fun times.  the same a is applied here of course... start simple and then move to more complicated shapes that you are seeing.  and keep everything in straight lines to begin with.  this part, known as the block in, is by far the hardest and most frustrating part bc u literally have to exactly correct otherwise the cast will be incorrect.  and then u think is wrong u check, u double check, u triple check...  yea its pretty frustrating but im learning so much and each time u make a new line it gets better and that alone is a sickkkk feelinggg.

and of course some figure drawing as usual.  the last 2 are from our live sessions and the others are more back studies for our figure construction class.

anyways thanks for stopping byyy

by the way this is what my cast set up is like here at the ATX Pod.

here is the basic setup and how it began when i started which is literally about a month ago.

comp study done in photoshop still struggling hard core with the round brush

WIP of asaro head being done digitally and just in black and white

hey hey just a quick update on some work i have been doing this past week.  i started doing an asaro head study. trying to get into digital as much as i can.  sadly i didn't get like any oil painting done this last week.  will have to make it up this weekend.  about to get even more hectic because half the semester is already gone.  pretty insane how fast time has been going by / its already been 8-9 months since i have been at TAD (soon it will be one whole year!).  so this asaro head will probably will be complete for now until the end of the semester because i have to use any spare time i have to complete my cast and any other work i need to catch up with!   as usaual some more studies with the construction of the figure.

anyways quick update as i needz to get back to the grindz... thank u as always for stopping by.

quick comp study with soft brush photoshop

WIP of oil painting with zorn palette (hopefully will have time to come back and finish it off)

live model about 1 hour pose

monochromatic painting

hey hey another update from past week.  more construction of torso / head and neck and one of the pics was supposed to be a complete drawing but still am not understanding the material too well seems like i am just following the contour line. As already known, the construction is supposed to help us complete the drawing, its supposed to be an under drawing that helps us figure out whats going so we can complete a drawing of a figure (which is what i tried to do somewhat in the live session) just takes me a very long time to figure out stuff and what is really going on.  (all in due time!!) draw moaarrrrrrrrrr.... and more color studies needs to be done with the application of the paint.  having real hard time forming the portrait and showing the change in planes and making smooth transitions.  i realize that i just stick to a few colors and i even don't mix near then enough.  i will have to work on that.  Also the second oil painting done in burnt umber and titanium white is going to be continued on this week by doing a glaze over it to get the colors that we see... so we will see how that goes (will be giving that attempt today actually)

thanks for stopping by.  i did make another attempt this week at Zorn pallete and my color was a lot more off then the attempt i made on this; which i will update at the end of this week or some time next week.  i have no idea what was going on but i could not get the right colors at all and i found out its bc i was literally taking the "limited" pallete to theory and really really limiting myself when there are tons of colors going on in a portrait part of the problem is i have a very difficult time just seeing the colors that are coming from the light source and adding to the face.  more studies of color theorrryyy!!!! and  i need to practice mixing colors exercises. oh and comp studies.... so much to do!  take care until next time!
